Authenticity is defined as the preservation and exploration of a refugee’s identity. There is a sense of temporality in a refugee’s journey, and this will be addressed through modification and production of concept, specifically through the design of furniture design. The designer aims to create a space that allows refugees to (1) self-ideate, (2) self-preserve, and (3) self-create, offering opportunities for empowerment, community building, and long-term integration. This capstone will challenge notions of relocating, and will be examined through the design of a safe modular living.
By addressing temporality in the journey of a refugee, the designer aims to create a space that can be temporary. A design that can be put together and pulled apart efficiently. The users of this space will be refugees seeking shelter. I will be proposing this design to an intergovernmental organization, The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for all nations to have ready. My site will be flexible. This product can be deployed as an emergency shelter anywhere. I will be programming spaces for sleeping, learning, and storing. My design strategy will help refugees feel less alienated, offering them safety and a sense of belonging through the design of a safe, temporary modular space.
